World War II Coast Guard (SPAR) uniform, ca. 1940
Order an ImageDuring World War II, the Coast Guard Women’s Reserve was known as the SPARs. SPAR is an acronym of the Coast Guard motto “Semper Paratus –Always Ready.” SPAR assignments range from essential clerical positions to air control operations, parachute rigging and more. The SPAR uniforms were the same design as the Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). The WAVE and SPAR uniforms designed by well-known designer Mainbocher and were known as the most stylish of the women’s wartime uniforms. While the designs were standard, servicemembers could have their uniforms made and tailored at local stores. This uniform has a label from Seattle department store Frederick & Nelson.
